Why are elastics used with braces?

Straightening the teeth with braces is the older method for straightening teeth, and even now it is the most effective treatment and the only available treatment for complex misalignment. The method used for this treatment is application of force on the teeth, which in a course of time changes and shifts towards the direction it gets pushed. So when the braces are fixed while the teeth are moving if the orthodontist wants certain set of teeth to move more towards a specific direction, he will give elastic to be worn in those areas. Based on the force needed to be applied these elastic can be light, medium or heavy. The size may also vary depending on the stretch needed. The elastics help in giving more definition to the shape of the teeth so that each tooth accommodates itself to the space available. Braces use the technique of calculating the movement of the teeth and creating space through manipulating the movement so that the jaw can hold all the teeth once straightened. This complex process has to be consistent to be fruitful.

Your Kentwood Orthodontist will give you elastics and you will be asked to wear them as prescribed for the braces to work better. You’ll definitely want all your hard work to give the best results so you will definitely want to wear them.

Elastics can be used to close up spaces between teeth, aligning the upper and lower jaws that too far from each other, gap between the jaws, or over jet –all of which cause bite problems. Wearing elastics are not mandatory. It depends on the kind of misalignment one has. When in Kentwood your Orthodontist tells you about the treatment he will tell you whether you need elastics.

The additional work that you have to do while having the elastics is to observe whether they have become loose. You have to be also careful that you are soft on the brackets while put the elastic on. A regular visit to the orthodontist keeps those things under check. The elastics can be kept all the time if they don’t cause any trouble. They can be removed while eating and brushing. Check with your orthodontist about it. Like if in Brookhaven when Braces were prescribed, ask questions to your orthodontist about when those can be removed and when those should be changed, how to know when to change them, etc. If you are given the elastics in Brookhaven along-with the braces it become easier for you to form a habit of wearing them from the beginning. But when they are added in the middle or towards the end of the treatment you may find it bothersome to adjust to an added work and routine. This is where many don’t follow their orthodontist’s prescription. If that happens to you too just remember all the hard-work you have done so far and the role of the elastics to enhance the results of that hardwork.
